Portraits are rarely found in the oeuvre of South Australian artist, Ian North. North and Daniel Thomas at that time Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia had been friends for many years and this photograph was taken quite spontaneously on a social outing at Henley Beach. North was inspired by the late afternoon light its pearly opalescent quality seemed just perfect for a portrait of Thomas.

This work is Thomas’s favourite portrait of himself and has never been exhibited before.
