Portraits are rarely found in the oeuvre of South Australian artist, Ian North. North and Daniel Thomas – at that time Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia – had been friends for many years and this photograph was taken quite spontaneously on a social outing at Henley Beach. North was inspired by the late afternoon light – its pearly opalescent quality seemed just perfect for a portrait of Thomas.
This work is Thomas’s favourite portrait of himself and has never been exhibited before.
